February 2007 Newsletter
Melvin and Donna Lee,
Volunteers.
Donna Denison and Melvin Lee were introduced by a mutual friend when Donna was working as a waitress in a little cafe near Hillsboro, Oregon. After a brief courtship they were married 44 years ago. They have three children and five grandchildren.
Melvin grew up in Forest Grove, Oregon. After a term in the Air Force he was working in banking, then as a logger, as a garbage collector and finally at Oregon Steel Mills. After a number of years with management problems the members opted to buy the company in 1985. Under new management they paid off all loans in a year and a half. When Melvin retired from the company as a Mill Foreman in 1988 the company had increased to four mills.
Retirement meant working on their nut farm in Dundee, Oregon and having time to follow his hobbies which include gardening, stamp collecting, reading and helping friends and neighbors.
Donna was raised in Leavenworth, Washington with one brother and four sisters. The families frequent moves took her to thirteen grade schools and two high schools while growing up. During World War I Donna's father played trumpet with Sousa’s band while serving in the Marines. Her hobbies include writing, drawing and crafts. Both Donna and Melvin were active in Scouting and received District Merit awards. For six years their vacations were spent at scout camps.
The Lees have been RVers for many years, traveling throughout the U.S. They joined Catalina Spa in 1991 and have been helpers in the Recreation Department for the last four years. This year they are volunteers and keep busy with the many activities. At the Sunday Barbecues you’ll see Melvin flipping hundreds of hamburgers and Donna serving potato salad and supervising clean-up.
They are two multi-talented and very busy folks who are always ready to help wherever they are needed.
